THE VALUE OF THE HUNTER INSTITUTE

Let’s Succeed Together

Welcome! The Hunter Institute aims to increase diversity representation in STEM by providing the tools, support, guidance, and opportunities for middle school to college-aged students interested in STEM fields.

MISSION

The mission of the Hunter Institute is to provide research and mentorship opportunities and continued support for the next generation of diverse scientists to not only succeed but thrive. The Hunter Institute reflects our commitment to increase the representation of minority students in scientific fields. Our mission statement emphasizes the need to "promote and expand diversity within the scientific community by building a supportive infrastructure for high school students through mentorship and collaborative activities." Thus, we aim to nurture underrepresented students to become competitive applicants and successful graduates from high-caliber undergraduate programs in the biomedical and natural sciences.

The Hunter Institute implements an exceptional multi-year mentorship and academic program for participating students. The program will focus on multi-level mentoring, academic integrity, career preparation, and planning to create competitive undergraduate applications. We aim to increase the engagement of underrepresented students in biomedical, clinical, behavioral, or natural sciences that may have been limited due to their race or ethnicity, disabilities, or socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. This initiative will foster a community of scholars that will become an integral part of our multi-level mentoring system. In addition to mentorship through high school and the college application process, students will also continue to receive mentorship as they matriculate through college.

Focus Areas

1

Research Opportunities

Our commitment to foster an environment for research experience is pivotal to developing a student's career interest and pathway. Therefore, we will implement a strategic approach to creating ambitious applicants by developing students' research interests, finding unique research opportunities, and formulating competitive applications.

2

Lifelong Mentorship

Our community is built on mentorship guidance from unique individuals with similar interests and experiences. We strive to help shape the development of students at all stages of their academic and professional careers through vertical and horizontal mentorship. Through this mentorship approach, students will excel in networking, problem-solving, skill development, and setting feasible goals.

3

Pathway Suppport

Our commitment to preparing the youth for a high-caliber education also extends to financial and academic guidance. We strive to help students prepare for scholarships and college applications as well! Students will attend seminars on identifying a college/scholarship and preparing a competitive application. This process includes peer review of personal statements, resumes, and other related documents.
